Which country has world best programmers?
Intrigued by an article posted here, I decided to write a short write.
The statistic in the link suggests that China, Russia, and Poland have best programmers in the world. But the data is solely taken from Hackerrank. AFAIK, its users are students who are trying to enhance their skills to get a job or some bored employed developers who hated their jobs and want to have an escape for their absolute hobby: programming.
The real fact is, greatest programmers will not have time to do programming problems in hackerrank or other sites. They solve real problems that are waited by society! Why would they waste time to do some imaginary or too theoretical problem sets when they have real problems to solve right in their faces?
Apart of the weak conclusion taken from a very non-convincing dataset, this statistic somehow gives us a clue where candidate of great programmers could be from.
Anyway I worked a lot with people around the world, and I met also stupid programmers from China, Russia, and Poland. I also met great programmers from other countries, including Indonesia.
Being a great programmer, does not mean you can solve programming problem as fast as possible. But you solve it based on the right requirement, keep the codebase clean, maintainable and sustainable. Even great programmer can solve the problem without writing any code, only by asking: “Do we really need this feature?”
